The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. The first school of social work in India, TISS was a pioneering effort with the objective of social welfare through academic excellence. In 1944, the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Since then, TISS has been expanding continuously in terms of educational programmes and infrastructure. While responding to the changing needs of the social and educational system in the country, the Institute has gone far beyond the initial concern of social work education. Thus, what started as a small Institution offering a postgraduate diploma in Social Work, grew into a Deemed University and, as a result, diversified its activities.
Since its inception, TISS has never limited itself to the mandate of a conventional university; rather, it has worked for the promotion of sustainable, equitable and participatory development, social welfare and social justice for all. We recognise the contribution of and are supremely grateful to the founders of the Institute, alums, teachers and staff for creating and nurturing an Institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centered, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all.
I am glad that alums have come forward to form TISS Alums Association and registered itself under the Bombay Public Trust and Society Registration Act 1860 (Registration No.: 529/2012-12, Mumbai). I am hopeful that this initiative will increase the level of communication and promote positive lifelong relationships between alumni and the Institute.
I welcome the activities and events organised by TISS Alums Association and its Chapters, such as National Alums Meet, Regional Alums Meets, Blood donation camps, Workshops, Mentoring Programmes and launching a separate website dedicated to the alumni and their relationship with the Institute. The website (tissaa.com and tissaa.tiss.edu) serves as a presence for alums to communicate with the Institute and with each other.
Staying connected through experiences at TISS is a simple but powerful bond, and provides the opportunity to reflect on our time at the Institute and the rich tradition and growing community that make our alma mater unique. We all have special memories of TISS, including the bonds we made with roommates, friends, and professors, as well as the classes and experiences that touched our lives. There is no better way to keep those memories and that meaning alive than actively being a part of the TISS Alums Association. I encourage you to connect with each other, give back to the Institute and current students and take advantage of the opportunities TISS continues to offer.
This is your alums association. Please join your fellow TISS Alums Association in exploring and participating in its dynamic programmes and services today, and begin to add great new TISS memories to those you already have. Wherever you might be, remember, you always have a home right here in the Institute.
Prof. S. Parasuraman
It is our pleasure to welcome you to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Alums Association (TISSAA). The association exists, wholly and solely, to help our alums and, by extension, the Institute itself.
After college days as we get busier with our professional and family life, we suddenly find we've lost touch with our batchmates, classmates or college friends. The Alums Association can help you stay connected with them and also with the faculty that taught and guided you. We can help you visit our libraries, seminars and symposia, web sites, social media and an array of programs designed with you in mind. They are all designed to create a reconnect between the alums and the Institute.
The TISSAA alum family is huge; they are currently spread across the globe. The National and Regional alums meets, on-campus activities, job posting services, and social media resources available through the Alums Association, its website and the Institute are all designed to help you be as successful as you can possibly be. After all, your success is our success.
At the same time, we would urge you to think of ways you can give back to the Institute to whatever degree you are comfortable. And we do not mean just monetarily, though that is, of course, always welcome. There are many ways to give back, from career and academic mentoring to volunteering time at on- and off-campus events to simply attending academic and social events. As you will find, giving back has another benefit: it feels good.
So thank you for visiting with us today, and please come back often. We encourage you to explore all that we have to offer to stay connected and make yourself and TISSAA stronger. And if you anytime find yourself in the Institute, please do not hesitate to stop by Alumni Office. We will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and will make you feel at home.
Signing off with the hope that TISS continues to be a vital part of you, we hope you and we shall stay connected.
With warmest regard,
Board of Trustees
